Stirling ready to celebrate Harmony Day
Monday, 20 March 2017
Federal Member for Stirling Michael Keenan today encouraged residents to be part of Australia's largest national multicultural event - Harmony Day 2017.
Harmony Day on 21 March provides communities the opportunity to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity, and recognise local groups and individuals.
Mr Keenan said Stirling is the most culturally diverse electorate in Western Australia.
“Forty percent of people living in my electorate were born overseas,” Mr Keenan said.
“Just a few of the many cultures represented include Chinese, Croatian, Greek, Indian, Irish, Italian, Macedonian, Croatian, Scottish, and South African.
“Australia’s cultural diversity helps make us who we are. The day promotes a sense of belonging for everyone. We have a proud history of welcoming people from all over the world and our community is stronger for it.”
Multiple events have been registered on the Harmony Day website for residents who would like to participate in the day’s celebrations. These include:
• Mirrabooka Library – Celebrating Harmony Day Storytime on Tuesday March 21 from 10:30am – 11:00am. Story reading, songs and craft will be available to children aged 2 – 6 years at 21 Sudbury Road Mirrabooka.
• Balga Primary School – Celebrating on Tuesday March 21, students and parents are invited to come to school dressed in their Cultural Dress and bring a traditional plate of food to share with the school community.
• Mirrabooka Harmony Day – Celebrating on Friday March 24 at the Herb Graham Recreation Centre in Mirrabooka from 10:00am to 2:00pm. A sausage sizzle and water will be provided free of charge, as will children’s activities and live entertainment.
Mr Keenan said the message of belonging goes beyond 21 March. It can be lived by each of us, every day.
“We should celebrate and talk about the benefits of our cultural diversity - how it brings us together, contributes to our economy and helps to create innovation in our multicultural society,” Mr Keenan said.
