STIRLING INDIGENOUS YOUTH URGED TO APPLY FOR THE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS YOUTH PARLIAMENT 2017

STIRLING INDIGENOUS YOUTH URGED TO APPLY FOR THE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS YOUTH PARLIAMENT 2017
Federal Member for Stirling Michael Keenan is encouraging young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply now for this year’s National Indigenous Youth Parliament (NIYP) to be held in Canberra in May.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to participate in a week-long leadership program and receive expert training in how government works, public speaking and dealing with the media,” Mr Keenan said.

“I urge young Indigenous Australians in Stirling who are passionate about issues that affect them and their community, and are interested in learning about parliament and how laws are made, to apply for the NIYP.”

The centrepiece of NIYP is a two-day simulated parliament in the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House in Canberra on 27-28 May 2017. Participants will debate bills on issues that affect their communities. The bills will be presented to the Australian Parliament for consideration.

“No specific experience is required to apply for NIYP, apart from a willingness to have a say in what's going on in your community. Successful candidates will be selected based on their ideas and their potential leadership skills," Mr Keenan said.

“The youth parliament coincides with a parliamentary sitting week in Canberra and I look forward to meeting this year’s candidates and discussing local issues of concern to them.”

NIYP is for Indigenous Australians aged 16 to 25 and will be held from 23-29 May 2017.
Applications must be submitted no later than Friday 3 March 2017. The online application is at www.aec.gov.au/Indigenous, call 1300 103 183, or email Indigenous@aec.gov.au.
The Youth Parliament is run by the Australian Electoral Commission in collaboration with the YMCA and the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House.
